2009 CRN Symposium report was given by Hema Master-Chair
The symposium was a huge success with > 190 registrants, several vendor exhibits, etc. NKF is changing the way they do their business and managing funds. They do not want CRN to have a separate bank account. CRN Councils will be a part of NKF and funds will be managed centrally by NKF. So the money collected for registration by credit card payment about $8500.00 would have been set aside in a separate account @ NKF & all the CRN expense payments to be handled by them. The money will belong to CRN. The CRN members, the President & Treasurer of CRN will then let the NKF know how the money is to be spent. This in a way left us in tough spot to pay for all our expenses for the Symposium, especially large amount for catering etc. After discussion with Chris Kelley it was decided that at present they will transfer the money to our CRN account by check. After all the income & expenses for the Symposium are cleared, Chris Kelley, CRN president & CRN treasurer will get together & help decide how to manage the funds. So on the books we have made profit of about $13,500 but till all the accounts are settled we cannot close the book regarding the Symposium. We will be able to complete & have report ready by the next meeting.

Salary Survey: Marilyn Mayfield will send out survey, which will be sent electronically to all members.

New Business:
CRN Membership forms and renewals for 2009-2010 was requested. Catrina Morefield is the new treasurer.

Motion passed by Kim Gehrke to maintain all education material with only on-line access to members instead of printing new material. This was seconded by Catrina Morefield.

CRN UPDATE: Given by Hema Master
We have made progress - the following locations were screened and still open to suggestions. Pros and Cons being evaluated with reference to costs, proximity to public transportation, cleanliness and space enough for meeting hall/breakout rooms, restrooms, vendors, etc.
1. Crown Plaza - SFO airport - Clean and near BART
2. Embassy Suites - SFO Airport - not very clean or conducive
3. Greek Orthodox Church, Oakland - Nice location but suitable for weddings/personal gatherings rather than an educational meeting
4. UC Berkeley - Hall will accommodate <200. Traffic problems during school year, may make it difficult to access easily
5. Winery in Livermore - Casa Real -7 miles from 680, with nice meeting facilities, fairly easy accessibility, etc.
6. Newark Hilton - Not near BART, but off 880 easy to access with ample parking space.
Costs mostly in the same range for most facilities - approx. $10-12,000 with catering included.
Programs Committee is well organized with 4-5 speakers/topics already lined up. Suggestions were given to use local well-known speakers such as Linda McCann for Vit D, Elaine Rodgers for Renal Nutrition in acute care setting, Dr. Guest - PD/HD home dialysis options/modality choices, Trish McCarley, RN - Educating/Counseling skills, Lynn -Herbs and alternative medicines

She also mentioned you can still send dues to Michele Yamanoha or to Darcy Becker.

EDUCATIONAL STIPENDS - Alison Rigby discussed and had the forms for stipends for the Chicago NKF meeting that is in April. The stipend is typically $500.00. Any member can apply for the stipend but only every five years. If you do apply and receive the stipend CRN would like you to give a 15-20 minute overview of the meeting highlights along with handouts at one of our next meetings.

LIASON REPORTS

NKF - Christopher Kelly (CEO of NKF San Francisco) and Suzanne Gibson also with NKF were present. Chris mentioned there have been a lot of changes in the past year with staff and volunteers. The NKF was losing money before and are working with a balanced budget now. The NKF has a new strategic plan where there will be more patient programs and more emphasis on prevention. He mentioned an upcoming fund raising event, April 19, which is a golf tournament in Stanford, and they still need volunteers. Another fund raiser is the May 22nd walk in Mountain View. The NKF still needs walkers, walker teams and volunteers. One is even welcome to volunteer the day of the walk.

Suzanne Gibson mentioned the family camp is May 29-31. The kid's camp is July 4-10. Suzanne also mentioned the KEEP program. Keep is Kidney Early Evaluation Program to screen for diabetes and hypertension. There is a June 12 screening coming up in Burlingame. NKF would like to start offering 8-10 screenings per year through the KEEP program.

Chris also mentioned a Medical Advisory Board has been formed and there is a $50.00 charge. In the past this has been physician oriented and now is open to allied health professionals. The second meeting for the board is in 2 weeks.

For more information about the NKF please go to their web site which is kidneynca.org

NKF medical symposium - Sue Dickey reported that the symposium was trying to reach more primary care physicians this year so that early stages of kidney disease could be identified. From all three meeting locations only 18 MD's attended. She mentioned the symposium was not a big money maker due to the three locations. Sue mentioned they would probably only have two locations next year. One will probably be in the Bay area and the other meeting in Sacramento.

NKF PATIENT SERVICES - Marilyn Mayfield spoke about kid's camp. She has white sweatshirts, which will have the kids and counselors on them. The kids really liked this last year. She mentioned that volunteers are still needed for kid's camp.

ESRD NETWORK - Sandy Wallace reported they are still working on the fistulas first project

SACRAMENTO CRN - Maureen Crera said they had a January Sacramento CRN meeting where a Dr Wolfe spoke on his research of Mortality rates comparing Calcijex vs Zemplar. Their next meeting is April 6th.

OLD BUSINESS

PUBLICATIONS Helen Christensen mentioned there are only 20 low sodium books left. It was agreed that since this is such an outdated book and not a good moneymaker they will not be reprinted. Sue Dickey mentioned that CRN may want to think about putting our CRN cultural Food Recipes and Ideas (the masters which are laminated) and offer them for sale. This could possibly be advertised on ikidney.com. Members are encouraged to bring everything they have on the cultural food recipes to the next CRN meeting so that we may compile what we have. We will vote at the next meeting as a group if we want to sell them.

COOKBOOK PROJECT - Megan Tichy mentioned a volunteer is needed to send out letters to update the cookbook list. Sandy Wallace agreed to do this.

2004 CRN SYMPOSIUM - Kelly Ackert reported that she needs someone to spearhead this project. She stated that a lot of the work has been done. She could meet with anyone who could volunteer to take on this project. Kelly has lists of people willing to help. A date, location and speakers need to be obtained. It was mentioned the Chardonnay Club in Napa would be a good choice and may possibly have a good turnout. If anyone is willing to spearhead this project please contact Kelly.

SALARY SURVEY - Marilyn Mayfield had the salary survey available for anyone that wanted a copy. Marilyn stated the survey has been responsible for better caseloads and salaries. The RD's who are unionized have better wages.

MARKETING - Laurie Sanft was not available.

LEGISLATION - Tracy Mulligan stated there was a bill on reimbursing organ donors for non-medical expenses that has been signed by the House and the Senate and is awaiting President Bush's signature. Tracy also mentioned there is a medical reform for cutting back the costs of the immunosuppresant drugs. Pharmacies are going to lose money if this reform is passed and then they would no longer carry the drugs. Tracy will continue to work on getting the legislation link on the CRN web site.

AB1444 & PROGRESS WITH CDA - Joyce Ezaki-Yamaguchi reported that DHS (Department of Health Services) feels it is not in the scope of the RD's practice to change orders for Rx meds especially IV meds. Joyce feels the pharmacy lobbyists are opposed to this also. CDA is working also on this issue trying to get DHS and the lobbyists to change their minds. Patty Pascarela is an RD with DHS who has been hard to communicate with in the past. She is now coming to CDA and wants to look at RD protocols. She is a public health RD. Joyce indicated that only 11 RD's responded to the DHS survey. The Scope of Practice and Lab Protocol has been submitted to the CDA and the lobbyist's and attorneys are now looking at it. The lab protocol is on the CRN website. Joyce would like the lab protocol sent as an attachment to an email to the CRN members for easier viewing.

There are also letters on the CRN website that need to be signed by Doctors. These letters need to be sent to the governor, CDA and the California Medical Association. Joyce stated changes can be made to the letters by nephrologists but these need to be positive changes!

OTHER BUSINESS -

APPLICTION FOR RECOGNIZED COUNCIL AWARD - Alison Rigby announced that she would like to submit our council for this award again. She would like to report the good things CRN members have accomplished such as the cultural recipes, our salary survey and Joyce Ezaki- Yamaguchi's hard work with AB 1444. If anyone has anything further to add please contact Alison so she can add to the list.

Program: Susan Hansen, MBA,RN,CNN spoke on Home Hemodialysis. The web page from the speaker for home hemodialysis is www.aksys.com

Location: UCSF at Mount Zion Campus

Business:
Minutes: The minutes from the last meeting (October 16) were approved with one correction to the NKF report: instead of "She advised we need to approach Ross and Mead Johnson for money for nutritional supplements for the NKF fund" Sue Dickey would like it to read that she suggested we form a committee to work with the NKF to help make nutritional supplements available to more patients.
Members requested that copies of the minutes be distributed at the meeting so they can be reviewed prior to approval.

Treasurer's Report:
Michelle Yamanoha was not present, but had prepared the report of last year's income and expenses which was reviewed. Michelle has moved and checks need to be sent to Michelle Yamanoha MSRD, c/o Satellite Dialysis, 1255 N. Dutton Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95401.

Corresponding Secretary: (Alison reported for Darcy Becker). Darcy requested that people update their memberships. The group requested that Darcy and Michelle generate a list of those who still need to renew membership. Sue Dickey will help to follow up with members who have not renewed.
Most members receive announcements and minutes via email, but since a few members do not, we will continue to send out hard copy information to those who request it. This issue was discussed.

Liaison Reports:
NKF BOD - Sue Dickey reported that the NKF Medical Symposium will be held on 3 dates: Wed, Feb 25 at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento, Thurs Feb 26 at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose, and Friday Feb 27 at the Hilton Hotel in Union Square in San Francisco. The program will emphasize early intervention, and people working in primary care (not just nephrology) are encouraged to attend.

Author's luncheon - Kristie Snider reported this was a successful event and she encouraged members to volunteer and/or attend next year. She also suggested that CRN sponsor a table next year. This can be discussed at a future meeting.

Patient Services- Marilyn Mayfield requested a donation for Kid's Camp sweatshirts. The group voted to donate money for the sweatshirts.

Old Business
Committee Reports

Publications- Helen Christensen is ordering brochures. She is not sure we can get the usual discount from Fong Bros printing without the order going through the NKF office (the office is short staffed and has not gotten back to her). She will go ahead and place the order and check with Michelle Yamanoha on this.

Cookbook Project for National CRN
Megan Tichy is requesting that someone take over for her to update the cookbook list. This is our group's project for National CRN. Megan did this 2 years ago and it needs to be revised. Megan has the letters that can be sent to update information so it should not be a very time consuming project. We will request a volunteer via the email list, and Sue Dickey will also bring this up at the Sacramento CRN Meeting.

The next Sacramento CRN meeting was announced.

Salary Survey- Marilyn Mayfield distributed the newest salary survey. Copies will be available at the next meeting. Members may also request a copy from Marilyn. Connie Schroepfer explained that Children's Hospital has a salary ladder that includes points for a Masters degree, speaking engagements and other professional activities. She suggested this may be something helpful for people who are at the top of their salary range. Helen Christensen noted that the union uses a system for classifying employees based on degree and years of service as well as activities and accomplishments.

Legislation- Tracy Mulligan had prepared a written report and copies were available. It was suggested that Tracy Mulligan post her notes as a link to the web for each meeting.

Implementation of AB1444- Scope of Practice and Lab Protocols:
Kristie Snider reported for Joyce Ezaki-Yamaguchi. Both of these documents have been posted on the website. The group voted at the last meeting to adopt the SOP with some editorial (non content) changes. Since then Joyce has added a statement on taking verbal orders which we need to note applies only to California dietitians. Joyce has requested that members view these documents on the website and send any comments or suggestions to her. The group voted to accept the SOP and Lab Protocol (if any major changes made we will need to bring this up again). Please remember that this is still a draft and is not to be distributed outside of our group. Thank you to Joyce for all of her very hard work on this project.

Symposium- CRN has the opportunity to have a table (free) at the NKF symposiums. We will be sharing the table with the CNSW. We voted to have the table and to bring order forms for our materials as well as membership applications. Megan, Kristie and Marilyn Aaron volunteered to staff the table at the San Francisco venue, and Helen volunteered to work at the San Jose site. Kristie will send an email to the group asking for additional volunteers.

Publications Report (Helen Christensen)
¨ Pamphlets are available free of charge to CRN members as a part of your membership. They are available at meetings, or Helen will mail you your order for only the cost of postage. Books are available at a reasonable price.
¨ We are running low on the Mocha Mix pamphlet. This may be expensive to reproduce, due to it being in two colors. We will get estimates on what it would cost to do this in black and white.
¨ A request was received from the Virginia CRN to include some recipes from our cookbook in a free patient cookbook they were putting together. Helen copied 5-6 recipes to send to them.

¨ No new activity for quite some time.

Cultural Holiday Foods (Kristie Snider for Anne Kleimann)
¨ Chinese and Russian menus were presented at the last meeting and some feedback was given. Anne is working to revise and reformat the brochures. Kelly Ackert and Megan Tichy may know someone who can do the Russian translation.
Low Literacy Brochure (Kristie Snider for Nancy Phillips)
¨ A draft should be available by our next meeting
2003 Symposium (Kristie Snider)
¨ Kathy Hunt is unable to continue as Chair for this event. After much discussion, Kelly Ackert and Diane Hamberlin have agreed to co-chair, with help from Susan Merrill. The timing of the event may be tricky to coordinate with other events such as the ADA meeting, CDA meeting, etc. Several possible topics were discussed. Merritt College in the Oakland Hills is the likely location. Please contact Kelly or Diane if you would be willing to help organize this event or have ideas for topics and/or speakers.
Recommendations for renal training
-Megan Tichy contacted internship directors to f/u on this from our last meeting. Internships prepare dietitians for entry level positions and do not have time for extensive training in any one area. The group brainstormed on ways to help increase renal training given these constraints.
Salary Survey (Marilyn Mayfield and Kelly Ackert)
¨ The results have been compiled and will be distributed at the next meeting and posted on the website.
-Thanks to Marilyn and Kelly for taking the time to collect and analyze all the data.
- Ways of helping dietitians improve their salaries were discussed. It was decided that we would write a letter to dialysis administrators. Marilyn Mayfield volunteered to do this.
Implementation of AB1444 (Joyce Ezaki-Yamaguchi)
-CDA is working on protocols and would like input from renal dietitians. Marilyn Mayfield, Ann Kelly and Kristie Snider volunteered to help with this.
Next Meeting
THURSDAY, JANUARY 30th, 2003 beginning at 11AM.

Now a proposal has been presented to give the Chair and Chair Elect a stipend annually to help attend the National CRN Meeting. COMMITTEES:
Legislation (Kelly Ackert):

A new state bill, SB1642, was introduced on behalf of the California Nurses' Association which would essentially eliminated the expanded scope of practice that RDs fought for in state law AB1444. CDA sponsored an urgent letter writing campaign to the Senate Business and Profession Committee. The committee asked both sides to find a compromise in the wording of the amendment. CDA has now changed its stance from opposition to neutral.

Stipend Requests
Lengthy discussion was held regarding our current budget for stipend requests and the method by which the money is allocated. It was felt that we needed to have more consistency in distribution. A vote was taken and $500 per stipend was agreed upon. Discussion was also held regarding increasing the budget from $2000 to $2500 per year.

Spring Seminar has been tabled.

LIAISON REPORTS:

ESRD Network (Sandy Wallace): The Network Meeting, Patient Safety is Everyone's Business, was held June 6 at the Lodge in Sonoma.

Report from NKF N. CA Board of Directors Meeting, March 21, 2002
by Sue Dickey
1. John Davis, national CEO of NKF, spoke. The most recent KDOQI guidelines for pre-end stage kidney disease have been published in the AJKD VOL 39, No 2, Suppl 1: Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease: Evaluation, Classification, and Stratification. This gives guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of CKD based on GFR. Another NKF priority is the KEEP program; designed to reach the 20 million people wiith undiagnosed or untreated kidney disease.
2. NKF is $250,00 over budgeted this year. They are working to cut costs and increase donations. One of these methods is the "Founders Group" which will have cocktail parties to introduce influential people to the many beneficial things NKF does for patients and medical research. Fundraising efforts will be changed based on costs/resources required to have the event vs. revenue generated. The Chefs and Cellars event and the East Bay Golfing event will be cancelled this year.
3. More than 300 health professionals attended the Medical Symposium in February.
4. Events scheduled:
· 6/15: Medical Advisory Board Dinner honoring Jackie Spear to be held at the Hotel Nikko. They are looking for companies to donate wine and dessert.
· 6/25-29: Transplant Games in Florida. They had 87 requested application, with two donor families planning to attend. They are looking for corporate sponsorship of participants.
· 8/4: Kidney Kids Camp
· 11/16: Authors' Luncheon in San Francisco.

CRN Web Site - Laurie Sanft
The Web Site is 80% complete and could be viewed on Laurie's Laptop at the meeting. Web Site protection is not possible without costly a fee. After some group discussion, it is decided that this coming years' minutes will be posted on the Web Site and CRN Members will be mailed a copy. Not all members have Internet Access or an e-mail address. This will be a transition year. Minutes sent via e-mail will save paper and postage. Individual Membership information posted in the Net, poses a problem. The mailing preferences will be included on the CRN Membership Application. Our CRN Web Site will eventually have forms available. Laurie plans to optimize the use of information technology. GOOD JOB LAURIE!

National CRN - Kathy Hunt
The Executive Committee for National CRN met this past month in Florida. Regional Membership has dropped by 70 members. This may be a result of notices being received prior to the Christmas, when they get overlooked. Please call the NKF 800 number to ask for assistance/directions on how to join. Elections are set to take place in June. Ballots will be mailed to National CRN Members by July 15. Our Region does have elections for a new Alternate and a new Representative. The Nominating Committee is now completing the Ballot. The candidates for Alternate Representative include a person from the L.A. Area and one from Oregon. Region Rep. Includes a person from Arizona.
The Fall Meeting will be in San Francisco. There are concerns over the Counsel Displays. A letter needs to be sent to the Fall Counsel Chairperson in regards to our concerns.
A few CRN Members have been asked to meet with HCFA regarding the new Medical Nutrition Therapy Act, what it means for the Pre-ESRD Coverage, what they need, what we want to teach. Jodie Goldstein, the editor for the Journal of Renal Nutrition, 5 year term is coming to a close. The new editor will be announced.
There will be a change in terminology used by NKF as a result of a vote to use different terms in the future. Examples: Renal & End Stage Renal Disease will be labeled Kidney & Chronic Kidney Disease. It is felt that this terminology is more descriptive and more recognizable than Renal Disease. NKF Materials will say Kidney Disease.

Cultural Holiday Menus - Joanne Iwamiya/Evelyn Middleton
Joanne passed around the Draft/Mockup. Comments and opinions needed. Comments thus far: suggest the the FONT be changed to a one space character for ease of making insertions/corrections and SMALL PORTIONS of a cultural food item should be allowed , as apposed to eliminating them altogether. The DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE will be expressed at the educational level of our patients.
Evelyn reports that the Filipino translation is difficult. The language in the Cultural Food Book is formal. She is using colloquial wording incorporated in English with Tagalog which is the more common dialogue here in the USA. It will include art work and foods categorized as Appetizers, Salads, Entrees, and Desserts in the first draft. Input from Filipino patients in other units will be helpful.

CRN Website - Laurie Sanft

Laurie is learning how touse the Website development software. She has not work on the design yet. The links are put together. She has enrolled in two classes on Web page Design. There will be a Home page which will include a picture of a CRN Meeting. She will need input for style. The home page will include a description of what CRN as an organization with it's mission and goals [about us]. A VOLUNTEER is needed for writing this page. The will be a Membership page with Benefits of membership, current CRN Officers, Directory. Work Info. It will have an e-mail link. It will include meetings and events, past minutes, educational materials and books. Sheplans to include a photo of each Brochure by using a shrunk down picture of the covers with a description. She welcomes comments from the CRN Members. Good Job Laurie!

OLD BUSINESS
Renal Cookbook Website Listing - Sue Deepak
Sue has updated the Cookbook Website updating the Renal Cookbooks available, Authors, and current prices, mailing addresses. This information has been forwarded to National CRN to update the Website.

National CRN Exhibit, Orlando, Florida - Joanne Iwamiya
Our CRN exhibit was more successful than in previous years because the display was in a very visible location. The Cultural Books generated a great deal of interest. We need to have more order forms available for October.

Salary Survey - Marilyn Mayfield/Kelly Ackert
Marilyn needs more surveys to be returned to her. Thus far, there is a noticeable improvement in the salaries from this year's surveys. (This is for the benefit of us all).

CDA'S AB1444 - Joanne Iwamiya
The Business and the Dietitian's Title Act in Profession Code, was amended twice. This Bill can be found on the Internet at Leginfo.Ca.gov, select Bill info 1444. (Print the amended form). The Bill includes Registered Dietitians and Diet Technicians (DTR) as Nutrition Professionals. The Bill will authorize RD's and other nutrition professionals to order medical laboratory tests related to nutrition therapy treatment and to accept or to transmit verbal or electronically translated orders or protocols from the Healthcare Provider in order to implement therapeutic treatments. The implication is that the RD will be able to accept verbal orders from the physicians. RD's will be able to follow Protocols signed by the Physicians. AB 1444 is going to the House Appropriations Committee (21 Members). This Bill has no Financial Impact on California's Budget. A Legislative CRN Committee will be appointed.. CRN Members can print a copy of the amended Bill or look at the CDA Website, under Dietitian.org.
Pre renal, post transplant, and diabetes counselling will be paid for at the Federal level. There is a move to include cardiovascular counselling for reimbursement, this year.

NEW BUSINESS
Honoring Past Presidents - September Meeting Joanne Iwamiya
We will be honoring the past CRN Presidents at the September Meeting. Genzyme has graciously consented to sponsor an evening meeting for us. There will be a two educational presentation. After a consensus and a vote, Thursday, September 27th was selected as being the date for this momentous occasion.

CRN Meetings - Sue Dickey
Sue needed input regarding the scheduling of future meetings. The National Dialysis Unit Chains and Satellite Units have quarterly meetings. We have a meeting every other month. This meeting has the best attendance on record. The potential change of our meeting to something different was open for discussion. A vote is needed
to switch to quarterly meetings. At the National CRN level, which meets quarterly, Kathy Hunt voiced concerns of the difficulty of completing projects with fewer meetings. The cost of meeting sites is about $200 average.
We could offer two CEU's instead of one. We could have business meetings in between without CEU's. We could omit Summer Meetings. Hospital meeting locations are limited. Reports can be sent out. Committees would meet outside of these meetings. The bigger issue is that Dietitians may not be able to leave work attend these meetings. It was decided to not have a November meeting because of the October NKF Professional Councils Conference in San Francisco. There will be a needs survey and further discussion.

CRN Nominations - Kelly Ackert
The requirements of the Chair-Elect per our By Laws , must have held a prior office. The reason for this is that an incoming officer will have difficulty representing us. After some comments and discussion, it was decided that the By Law's need to be reviewed. The needs of the CRN Members have changed. We are not involved in as many projects as we have been in the past.

The Spring Meeting will become the Annual Meeting for National CRN. However a Fall Meeting is scheduled for October 10 - 14, in San Francisco. It will also me an international meeting. Plans for an excellent program are in progress.
Nominations for CRN Region Representative opens in June. Kathy has information on the qualifications for Region and Alternative Representative. She recommends that one should be an Alternate first to familiarize oneself of what is required of the Region Representative.

Cultural Holiday Menus - Michelle Yamanoha/Judy Boccanfuso
Michelle came to coordinate the progression of this project. Last year Linda McCann produced the laminated copies. There are 160 Dialysis Units in Northern California, 5000 copies were not enough. Historically, CRN produced an annual Holiday Menu. Last year's was a standard general one with guidelines. It was intended that the Cultural Guidelines would follow next. This years brochures include: FILIPINO (Evelyn Middleton), CHINESE (Sofia Li/Virginia Lee), RUSSIAN(Kelly Ackert), JEWISH HOLIDAY (Marilyn Aaron).
What the Facitilites receive will be Copy Ready. The cost is uncertain. The fund raising will result from sales to other CRN Groups.

A correction is needed before the Renal Cookbook Website Listing is updated. This project is the local CRN's contribution to National CRN.

National CRN Herbal Fact Sheet - Kathy Hunt
The Herbal Fact Sheet will reflect National CRN's herbal philosophy on dealing with herbs. The goal is to encourage people who use herbs to inform their physician that they are using them. It will be at least 6 months before the draft is ready to view for comments.

CDA Product Market Place at Annual Meeting - Joanne Iwamiya
There were no sales. A multitude of orders forms were taken. Future order forms need to be coded in order to identify when and where the brochures were obtained.
